The U.S. pharmaceutical market was $211 billion in 2003, the first time the market exceeded $200 billion. Roughly $22 billion of that market was biotech products, according to IMS Health. The strongest growth was seen in the generic and biologic sectors. Managed care plans and pharmacy benefit managers can benefit from the strong generic presence in the market, but also face challenges relating to biotech drugs.
