PPO enrollment remains high, but location is a key factor

Overall enrollment remains highest in preferred provider organizations (PPOs), with 3 in 5 covered workers enrolled in this type of plan, according to the Employer Health Benefits 2009 Annual Survey issued by the Kaiser Family Foundation. HMO enrollment continues to be relatively higher (31 percent) in the West and significantly lower in the Midwest (10 percent). Employees in the Midwest and South are more likely to be enrolled in PPO plans (66 percent and 64 percent, respectively). Enrollment in HDHP/SO (high deductible health plans with a savings option) plans remains steady at 8 percent of covered workers in 2009.
