Survey: HMOs confused about HIPAA privacy regs

Though the clock is ticking for HMOs to comply with new privacy guidelines under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, indications are that many companies are confused about what they need to do.The deadline for most health care companies is Oct. 16, 2002 (see related story). The National Council for Prescription Drug Programs surveyed more than 400 HMOs, insurers, and PBMs regarding privacy compliance. While many organizations think they are ready, uncertainty exists.
