Somebody’s doing something right. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention saw a significant drop in death rates in 2011 for 5 of the 15 leading causes of death. There was a major decline in 3 of the top 5 causes of death: heart disease, cancer, and stroke.... Visits to Doctors increased in 2012, according to a study by Truven Health Analytics. Primary care physicians, including OB-GYNs, saw 12.7 patients per day in the third quarter, compared with 12.4 per day in the same quarter in 2011. Ray Fabius, MD, Truven’s CMO, says the increase reflects health reform’s effort to push patients into doctors’ offices. . . . There’s kinda, sorta a silver lining to a Rand report on obesity, but it’s hard to see it in the glare of the bad news. From 2000 to 2010, the proportion of Americans 100 pounds or more overweight rose from 3.9 percent to 6.6 percent. And while that’s much steeper than the increase in people considered moderately obese, the growth of the severely obese population did begin to slow in 2005. Not much to cheer about, because the population as a whole continues to get heavier.
