During an appearance in Cincinnati, Ohio, to promote his infrastructure plan, President Donald Trump told the press that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) is in a “death spiral” and must be reformed soon, according to Reuters. His comments came one day after insurer Anthem Inc. announced that it would withdraw from the Ohio health insurance exchange next year, dealing a potentially crippling blow to the Obama administration’s health care system.
President Trump has been struggling to get a new health care plan passed by Congress, even though the Republican party controls both the House and the Senate. A House plan was approved on May 4, and the Senate is working to pass its own version this summer.
“Obamacare is in a total death spiral, and the problems will only get worse if Congress fails to act,” the president said. He added that opposition from Democrats needed to be overcome in order to repeal and replace the PPACA.
“It's only obstruction from the Democrats. The Democrats are destroying health care,” he said. “It's only going to be Republicans or bust. The Democrats are really in our way.”
