Paperwork-hassled physicians might be thankful if a plan by Humana, Oxford, and United HealthCare is the start of a trend: a single credentialing application honored by all three companies.The three agreed to use a universal application, thus avoiding duplication for physicians who contract with more than one. All three outsource credentialing to the same company, Aperture.
It may be the biggest leap yet in an area of cooperation that has seen only baby steps. In Minnesota, several health plans use a joint application developed by the state's council of health plans. The AMA has a blanket credentialing process, but so far only one plan, Altius, in Utah, uses it.
