The Sachs Group, an Illinois consulting firm, surveyed more than 100,000 members in 140 health plans before listing six health plans on its fourth annual “HMO Honor Roll.” While the number of plans making the cut was down from last year's 14, this year's criteria differed slightly. Plans that scored well in member loyalty and that outperformed competitors in providing health-and-wellness information made this year's list; in 1998, HMOs had to measure up to loyalty and member-satisfaction yardsticks for honor roll inclusion. Honor roll status helps HMOs to market themselves.
