Most health savings account (HSA) plans cover recommended preventive benefits on a first-dollar basis, which is to say without regard to whether the deductible has been met.
America’s Health Insurance Plans surveyed its members to determine the preventive benefits provided by high-deductible health plans (HDHPs) that are compatible with HSAs. Results were published in the report, “A Survey of Preventive Benefits in Health Savings Account (HSA) Plans,” and released in November.
Among HSA/HDHPs offering first-dollar coverage, 100 percent cover adult and child immunizations, well-baby and well-child care, mammography, Pap tests, and annual physical examinations and screenings. Nearly 90 percent provide first-dollar coverage for prostate cancer screenings and 83 percent of HSA/HDHPs offer coverage for colonoscopies.
Nearly all (99 percent) HSA/HDHP policies purchased in the large-group market — employers with 51 or more employees — and the small-group market (96 percent) — employers with 50 or fewer employees — provide first dollar coverage for preventive care.
