When Cejka & Co. surveyed physician executives in 1997, it didn’t find a lot of variation in direct compensation. Median compensation nationally was $188,850: higher in and around cities ($190,000) than in rural areas ($180,000), higher for those with more experience, lower in the West. Size of the organization was not a factor, but type of organization and the executive’s medical specialty were obviously tied to compensation level in some way. Family physicians and general internists accounted for 35 percent of the 3,912 survey returns.
