Compensation growth for specialists fell behind that of primary care physicians in 2004 for the first time in several years, according to the Medical Group Management Association. Specialists reported only a 0.2 percent increase in compensation overall, compared to a 20.6 percent increase in overall growth over the previous five years. Primary care physicians reported a 3.1 percent increase in overall compensation in 2004; over the previous five years, they had enjoyed an overall increase of only 9.0 percent.
