The American Medical Association's program of physician accreditation, AMAP, got a big boost from Utah's Altius Health Plans. Altius became the first plan to require AMAP accreditation for physicians on its provider panel.
AMAP's checklist includes outcomes, disciplinary actions, a site visit, and more. The AMA, which hopes that more health plans will recognize AMAP as a viable alternative to the often cumbersome credentialing process, is working with the National Committee for Quality Assurance and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations to develop common measurements and reduce duplication.
Physicians who do not meet AMAP standards will be dropped from Altius's panel.
