Managed care's appetite for the services of primary care physicians is apparently helping to boost these doctors' compensation. Over the four years starting in 1991, while health insurance premiums stopped posting big annual increases and in some cases started downward, compensation for both family physicians and internists increased by more than 22 percent. Though other specialties generally still earned morevastly more, in some casesmost couldn't match those rates of increase. (Note that anesthesiologists and diagnostic radiologists actually saw their compensation decline, and that internists' median compensation surpassed that of psychiatrists.)
