The American Medical Association's annual physician income survey shows that, on average, doctors are making close to $200,000 a year. Random interviews with 4,000 physicians revealed a mean income in 1996 of $199,000 after expenses and before taxes–about a 2-percent increase from 1995, and almost 10 percent higher than in 1994, the only year in which the average physician salary dropped. Incomes were up despite the spread of managed care; 92 percent of physicians surveyed had at least one managed care contract, up from 88 percent the previous year.Figures are averages of all physicians regardless of specialty and location. Residents and active, federally employed patient care physicians are excluded.
