COMPENSATION MONITOR

Where physician executives can expect the best pay

Most doctors who are in the process of moving out of clinical practice and into the role of a physician executive either have obtained, or are in the process of obtaining, a post-graduate business degree, says Lois Dister, the senior vice president at Cejka & Co. She should know. Cejka conducts a physician executive compensation survey every other year, and will bring out the latest one within the next month.

So, should the data in these charts — comparing 1998 and 2000-- be ignored as being too old? Not at all, says Dister. "These are not going to change that much," she says. "I don't see any big swing."

Business degrees boost income

Thirty-three percent of the 3,024 physician executives were medical directors. However, compensation varied from $200,000 for HMO medical directors to $250,000 for those in single-specialty groups.
