Growing reliance on managed care seems to affect income for key specialties differently in single-specialty group practices than in multispecialty groups, according to a recent survey of more than 1,300 medical practices nationwide. Primary care physicians in single-specialty groups apparently prospered more with a little bit of managed care than with either none or a lot, while those in multispecialty groups took a hit as they moved into managed care and bounced back when their involvement deepened. For cardiologists in multispecialty groups, however, there was no bouncing back; for them, turning to managed care for the bulk of their revenue spelled a large pay cut.
